WEIGHT AND ENERGY: WHY TO MAKE THE HEART BEAT FASTER

When the heart beats, it supplies blood throughout the body. Blood transports oxygen throughout the body. We know the human body requires an adequate supply of oxygen to function properly. Obviously, the heart works twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week pumping blood, supplying that oxygen. From the moment of conception, a fetus requires oxygen to develop; within five to six weeks, the heart muscle begins to develop and beat.

Normally, we don't want to drastically increase our heart rate, with one significant exception -ring exercise. When we are out of shape, the heart has to work harder. Think back to the example about climbing the flight of stairs; you would never want to ask your heart to beat faster except during exercise. Cardiovascular exercise is the key to improved cardiovascularity, which means the body is transporting oxygen more efficiently. Here's how it works. Going back to my staircase example, the large muscles of the lower body, specifically the quadriceps (front of the legs), the hamstrings (back of the legs), and the gluteus maximus (your behind) need to work to propel you up each step.

These large muscles require oxygen to perform the activity. Remember, oxygen is in the blood and blood is pumped by the heart. So, as you go from step one to step two and on and on, the muscles keep demanding more oxygen-rich blood. If you perform this activity for fifteen to twenty minutes, you actually will be training your body, and specifically your heart, to respond to the activity. In other words, your body becomes more conditioned. Walking up these stairs fifteen to twenty minutes is an example of cardiovascular exercise, ; is walking, running, cycling, swimming, an aerobics class – in other words, any physical motion that requires the heart rate to accelerate (which additionally includes strength and resistance exercises).

If you regularly perform a cardiovascular activity two to three times a week for fifteen to twenty minutes, this will greatly enhance your cardiovascularity.

I do want your heart to beat faster during cardiovascular exercise, because that will ultimately lead your heart to beat less when it is at rest. Yes, faster equals slower. Why? Your heart muscle is becoming "conditioned" to the demands you are placing upon it. This occurs because the heart becomes more efficient at supplying oxygen to the working muscles. Something called "stroke volume" improves, which means more oxygen-rich blood is pumped with each beat. Basically, you are getting "more bang for your buck" with each heartbeat.
