Two other factors that can cause several pounds of water retention, without overeating, are severe stress, which I hope you will never face at any time of your life, and physical activity at a high intensity or prolonged duration, to which you are not accustomed.
With respect to stress, weight gains of 6 or 7 pounds have been noted in persons experiencing the onset of divorce proceedings, the death of a person dear to them, or a war. And after unusually hard exercise, you may overshoot the mark in your fluid intake.
